From Dylan at Little Thing Wine:
Pormenor Vinhos represents a dream to be free from the bounds of tradition. Winemaker Pedro Coelho felt constrained by the rules of the Douro and the expected style of high alcohol, intense extraction, and new oak. Conversely, Pormenor allows Pedro to lock in on the potential for Douro wines to show freshness, restrained alcohol, and elegance. He cultivates high-elevation old vines for intensity and crafts them into full-bodied but restrained examples of powerful Portuguese reds. He exclusively works with indigenous varietals and ferments them with native, wild yeasts.
This bottle is a blend of organic Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, and Rufete. The grapes are all from 60+ year old vineyards planted 1,500 feet in elevation in Soutelo do Douro, which boasts distinct schist soils. Those soils play a decisive role in the finished wine, a thread of wet-stone minerality that winds its way from the nose to the palate.
Violet-hued and berry-fueled, the minerality and slight toasted nuance from 18 months in multi-use wood add an elegant savoriness to this wine. The result is aromatic and powerful. The wine exists entirely in its own eternal struggle between density and freshness; the intersection is absolutely stunning.
