From Dylan at Little Thing Wine: One of the things I love about Austrian wine is the amount of wineries started by monks in the Middle Ages. Those crazy old men love to party! Stift Göttweig is one such winery, dating back to the 11th century. Its current iteration began in 2006, when the powers that be placed Fritz Miesbauer of Domäne Wachau fame—already successful in his management of Wiengüt Stadt Krems—in charge of Stift Göttweig to revitalize its name. Stift Göttweig is now twenty-six hectares of vineyards in Kremstal, situated along the right bank of the Danube.
This wine is all about the terroir. You’ve got the mild climate of the Kremstal, where the warm Pannonian winds and cool forest air of the Waldviertel meet, all regulated by the river. The grapes grown here have a certain opulent fruitiness, spice, and vibrancy. This Gruner is entirely sourced from one vineyard, called Gottschelle, consisting of all gravel and weathered sediment topped with wind-blown loess. The final result is so green and flinty, so orchard-grown and delicately spiced, so citrusy and lithe.
Austrian wines have long been a wine-industry favorite for their food-friendly nature. This is especially true with Gruner. The blend of acidity and fruit and greenery can match just about any meal. It never gets old. And it’s at its very best in the springtime, matched with all the seasonal produce that’s about to inundate our groceries: peas, asparagus, radishes, etc.
