From Dylan at Little Thing Wine: While the name “shoulder season” doesn’t necessarily evoke romantic getaways and grand adventures, I have always loved this time of year, when it’s not quite winter anymore and not exactly spring yet. Perhaps it’s because change is an infectious feeling—and this is a marked time of adjustment with plants blooming despite the frosty mornings. I’m torn between wanting to purchase a new bathing suit or knit myself a warm winter hat. It’s one of my favorite times of year to travel.
I often think about Italian hillsides blanketed with fog—now that evokes romantic getaways and grand adventures. It’s easy to daydream about a cloudy Piedmont morning turned golden in the afternoon sun. I’ve long loved wines from this part of the world, and I believe that Langhe Nebbiolo offers some of the best value in the entire world. Let this bottle be a fine example.
The Langhe is the greater region that Barolo and Barbaresco sit within. For all intents and purposes, Langhe Nebbiolo is Nebbiolo grown outside of the prestige sub-regions of the Langhe. So, it may not have the exact terroir of a trophy Barolo, but it also will not have the exorbitant price. There’s truly a magic to Nebbiolo: the mixture of flower, fruit, and earth feels otherworldly. That is why the bottles from the Langhe still feel like one of the best kept secrets of wine and restaurant industry folks. Such precision, such tension, such enjoyment for such a low tag. It always feels important to mention that Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s great food wines. And one of Italy’s great foods? Pizza. I don’t make the rules, but I do live by them.
