The owners of Maanschijn are childhood friends turned business-partners. Isn’t that sweet? After studying winemaking at Stellenbosch University together, Paul and Doug took jobs at two of South Africa’s most prominent wineries. In 2016, they decided to make a little bit of wine together, and the rest is history. They remodeled Doug’s family farmhouse—a modest little building on a saltwater lagoon surrounded by dozens of Tasmanian blue gum trees—and created Maanschijn. It means Moon Shine in English.
As a winery, Maanschijn is all about Walker Bay, the coastal region 60 miles north of Cape Town where they call home. This is a cool, maritime climate where they can produce a diverse set of wines. This bottle is all Sauvignon Blanc from the Stonefields vineyard, planted just below the Maanschijn cellar. It sits along the estuary and is deeply influenced by the proximity to water. They named the bottle Luma, a combination of the latin words for moonlight: lumen lunae.
Fresh is the first thing that comes to mind when tasting this bottle. Piercing, chiseled, and bright, this is a blend of lemon-lime citrus and peachy blossoms. It has Sauvignon Blanc’s signature greenery in the form of fennel and chamomile. Sauvignon Blanc is such a fun grape to explore terroir through. It’s a grape that has its own distinct personality, no matter where it’s grown or what happens, you’re getting citrus and you’re getting green-notes. But how they present—specific flavors, quantities, etc.—is totally dependent on region and winemaker. This is South Africa; this is Walker Bay; this is Maanschijn.

- Saturday is for pickups at our Sodo Production Kitchen (3810 Airport Way S, 98108) from 12pm-4pm.
- Tuesdays we deliver to West Seattle/Burien/White Center/Seatac and Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond/Mercer Island.
If you are ordering alcohol you’ll need to be available to for us to check your ID during delivery.
