From Dylan at Little Thing Wine: I should probably start here: I am obsessed with Špela Kobal. She is the wife of the husband-wife team behind Kobal in the dramatic hills of Slovenia’s Štajerska region. She came to Seattle in February and we hit it off immediately. I’ve long been a fan of these wines and their balance of terroir-specificity and conviviality, but it always means so much more when you get to meet the people behind the wines. They crawl deeper under your skin, moving from something to be enjoyed to something to be understood.
Štajerska is known as the land of a thousand hills. It has been a center of viticulture for millenia; Romans planted the first vines here. Kobal’s home of Haloze is characterized by its extremely steep, terraced vineyards that climb the sloped hillsides. The cool evening winds sweep through the vines creating aromatics and freshness; the limestone soil lends depth and concentration to the finished wines; the terroir here crafts charming, thoughtful wines, and the Kobals are able to harness that unique combination in spades.
This bottle is medium bodied and endlessly drinkable. The fruit is berry-fueled and purple as can be, kept elegant by a serious dried fruit element and a bit of forest. It takes a skilled hand to coax refinement out of a wine chock full of earthly charm, yet the reality of being over-produced can wipe away all individuality. I love the balance of nature and precision here. That blend seems to be the calling card of Kobal.
