From Dylan at Little Thing Wine:
I’ve had a total crush on Pietramore for a few years now and am thrilled to finally slip one of these bottles into the wine club. This is a winery that’s all about place: 70 hectares in Abruzzo, crisscrossing the provinces of Chieti, Teramo, and Pescara. This region sits between the Maiella mountains and the Adriatic sea, showing a unique microclimate and diverse collection of soil types. In fact, The winery is called Pietramore because Pietra means stone and Amore means love and winemaker Maria Pia Leone has a deep love for the mineral vineyards she calls home.
Maria started Pietramore in 2011 with her partner Massimilano and today the winery is Demeter-certified, biodynamic, and entirely vegan. They farm many of the indigenous grapes of Abruzzo and central Italy. This particular bottle is a lesser-known white variety called Passerina.
Passerina is an ancient variety used in the white wines of the Marche, and it is mostly grown there to this day, along with neighboring Abruzzo and Emilia-Romagna. Different subregions show off different sides of this grape, but the common thread is ripe citrus fruit and an intense minerality.
This is a delightfully springy bottle with yellow and green fruit—ripe and underripe—and a crystalline vein of minerality. Underneath, there are white flowers, too. The palate remains decidedly fresh, but does boast some textural elements that add a little body, mostly from the elevage on the lees. This is not a variety we see often in our market; what a treat to get to share it with you. I’d personally cook up a big bowl of Spaghetti alle vongole and enjoy this baby al fresco.
